Temple University Radio Networking Summit (TURNS) is WHIP Radio’s biggest annual event, allowing the upcoming generation of the media industry to gain connections and learn from current professionals. Our 2021 Panels, listed below, address a variety of topics and are open to anyone interested in learning more about navigating the changing media landscape. We hope you will join us for TURNS 2021!

Keynote Address

Starting at 12pm, join us for a keynote address from Division President at iHeartMedia of the New York City Metropolitan Area Scott Hopeck. Following the keynote address, you will be invited to join a Zoom session to jump around our many breakout sessions.

Scott Hopeck’s mindset of “making things better” has led to a successful 21-year career driving top and bottom line growth in the media and entertainment industry. This has earned him the reputation of being a turnaround leader, currently serving as Division President (overseeing many Regions, including New York) — Driving change and growth in iHeart’s top cities: NYC, PHL, DC/BALT, CHI, MSP, HOU, D/FW, DEN, PHX and SFO. Scott lists his most rewarding achievement as finding and cultivating the talents of industry professionals who then move on to senior leadership roles.

Sports in Media

These media professionals bring the spirit of the stadiums home to you through their high quality reporting and local sports coverage.

John Kincade, KLN ’86 (he/him)

John Kincade, a sports radio career that started after graduating from Temple University in 1986. John has hosted at the local and national levels. “Buck and Kincade” spanned 20 years on 680 The Fan in Atlanta and was the longest running sports talk show ever in the South. John began his national radio career filling in for legends. His own national radio show spanned 15 years on ESPN and then CBS Sports Radio. He began co-hosting a podcast with Shaquille O’Neal in 2015. In 2021 he came back home to Philadelphia to host the “John Kincade Show” on 97.5 The Fanatic.

Tyrone Johnson (he/him)

Tyrone Johnson has worked in many areas of media, from local radio to the Wall Street Journal to iHeartMedia. His sports knowledge, radio experience and comedic timing landed him his current position as the Producer & Host of 97.5 The Fanatic as well as the Co-Host of Sixers Outsiders on NBC Sports Philly.

Zach Berman (he/him)

Zach Berman covers the Philadelphia Eagles for The Athletic. He was formerly the Eagles beat writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer and wrote the 2018 book, UNDERDOGS: The Philadelphia Eagles’ Emotional Road to Super Bowl Victory. He previously covered the New York Giants for the Newark Star-Ledger and the University of Virginia/Virginia Tech for The Washington Post, and was a contributor for The New York Time and appeared regularly on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Alexa Ross, KLN ’18 (she/her)

Alexa Ross has been covering sports in Upstate New York for the last three years, most recently, the Buffalo Bills, Rochester Americans, and Rochester Red Wings at News 8 WROC in Rochester. A Philadelphia native, Alexa attended Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication and received a degree in journalism. During her time in college, she was a campus correspondent for the AAC, an OwlSports Update anchor and Reporter, and worked for NBC Sports in Philadelphia and in South Korea assisting with live coverage of the 2018 Winter Games.

Marketing and Promotions

Industry experts in marketing, event management, social media and promotions discuss what it takes to keep radio running behind the scenes.

Reid Benditt (he/him)

Reid has spent over a decade promoting concerts in Philly, from the opening years at Union Transfer, to the latter years at the Electric Factory, now Franklin Music Hall. He has also directed the marketing for several local bars and restaurants like Morgan’s Pier and Drinker’s. In 2019 he produced the inaugural Whiz City Comedy Festival, set to be an annual event in the post-pandemic world.

Angela Lu (she/her)

Angela Lu is a Chinese Canadian artist manager currently based in NYC. She began her entertainment career when she went to LA for grad school where she took advantage of being in the heart of entertainment and worked in a variety of internships. It was there that she found her passion in helping artists and brands to deliver meaningful messages through the art of marketing (social media + influencer marketing especially), and public relations. As an entertainment industry professional, she manages two independent artists and offers PR + artist consultation services to student artists and developing artists. Angela currently works at a creative agency called 518 Music, which helps western artists with building presences in the Asian market. She provide strategies to artists in social media, branding, and brand partnerships.

Kate Marlys (she/her)

Kate Marlys emerged on the public relations scene over ten years ago when she launched www.PhillyPRGirl.com, her successful special events blog, with the goal of keeping readers in-the-know about “all things” Philly. Within two years of bringing her blog to the scene, Kate expanded her brand to include a full-service public relations company. Philly PR Girl LLC. was created and offers a full range of services including event planning, influencer marketing, digital and social media, public relations, and content creation. Kate herself has been featured in Philadelphia magazine, Philadelphia Style Magazine, Metro Philly, on Fox29’s Good Day Philadelphia and on NBC10.

Cory Councill (he/him)

Cory Councill began his career working at iHeartRadio in Philadelphia, then moved onto public relations at Fifteen Minutes in Los Angeles before joining Big Hassle in summer 2017. Cory has promoted clients in various industries from events, lifestyle, celebrity, entertainment, corporate brands, music, interior design, and crisis management. This includes music campaigns for SpinMedia, Paradigm Talent Agency, Red Bull Records, and bands/artists AWOLNATION, Dorothy, slenderbodies, Liily, Bob Mould, THE WLDLFE, Jai Wolf, Joe Bonamassa, Maggie Miles, micki maverick, Barenaked Ladies, Tim Ayre, Junaco, internationally renowned LA Phil Conductor Gustavo Dudamel and more.

Victoria Hamersky (she/her)

From South Philadelphia, Victoria Hamersky was able to use her passion for music to repeatedly beat the odds. Tori has been able to accomplish so much, all while juggling many chronic illnesses. With a deep love for the music industry, Tori used her knowledge to create her own artist management company at age 18 called VH Management Group. Through VH MGMT and her other industry positions , Victoria’s dream is to contribute to making the music industry more inclusive for women, BIPOC, Non-Binary, LGBTQ+, and persons with disabilities.

Eric “E.” White, KLN ’17 (he/him)

Eric White, professionally known as E. White (Class of ’17), is a proud Temple University and WHIP Alum! E.’s career started as an intern for radio legend Pierre Robert at 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia, and in the years following, has progressed his career to new heights as the host of The Night Show on legendary Top 40 station 101.3 KDWB in the Twin Cities! He is also heard nationwide on multiple iHeartRadio Top 40 stations every weekend. Previous stops for E. include Q102 right here in Philadelphia, 107.5 KISS FM in Des Moines, IA, and ALT 104.9 in St. Louis, MO!

Mina SayWhat (she/her)

Mina “SayWhat” Llona is an award-winning Radio Host and Multi-Media Personality. With over 10 years of broadcast experience ranging from television and radio to digital media, she has developed to wear many hats including: Radio Personality, Voiceover Talent, TV Reporter, Podcaster, Event Host, Brand Ambassador and Public Speaker. Mina SayWhat is currently on-air nationwide on SIRIUSXM The Heat. She is also heard in Philly on 100.3 RNB on the weekends, and hosts a podcast, Mina’s House Podcast. Mina began her career in radio at the age of 18 at Syracuse University. As Mina Llona, she has contributed weekly on Fox 29 Philadelphia and has appeared on 6ABC, CBS, and NBC10, also in Philly. Mina is bilingual and has hosted Philadelphia’s Puerto Rican Parade since 2014, which airs on 6ABC in Philadelphia.

Taylor Allen, KLN ’19 (she/her)

Taylor Allen is PlanPhilly’s housing and community development reporter. Before joining the PlanPhilly team, she was a Max Wycisk News Fellow at Colorado Public Radio and later became that station’s business/general assignment reporter. She previously worked at WHYY as a web producer/reporter and was a contributor for ‘Your Voice With Solomon Jones’ on Praise 107.9 before the station reformatted. She’s also an NPR Next Generation alumna. Allen is from Central Jersey and graduated from Temple University in 2019.

Kristen Kurtis (she/her)

Kristen Kurtis grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and knew by age 13 that she wanted to work in radio. She earned her BA at Emerson College in Boston, where she was heavily involved with the student-run station WERS before she landed her first part-time gig at WBOS. She has since held full-time positions at KZZU & KEZE in Spokane, WA and KGSR in Austin, TX before returning home in 2015 to host the morning show and fulfill assistant music director duties at WXPN.

Marilyn Russell (she/her)

Marilyn Russell started out in alternative radio and fell in love, serving as a Music Director and Specialty Show Producer. Following her stint at 103.9 WDRE, she worked at Y100 where she shared morning show duties with the now #1 show in Philadelphia: Preston & Steve. Interviews are her specialty and she aims to make people feel ultimately comfortable to share their life stories. For the last 14 years she has hosted a show in support of women ‘Remarkable Women’ which is a celebration of accomplishments in all forms. She is also passionate about ensuring that nonprofits have a platform to share their stories and needs.

Music Industry with Meet Me @ the Altar

Sit down with pop punk trio Meet Me @ the Altar as they share the wisdom they’ve gained during their years in the music industry.

Edith Johnson (she/her), Téa Campbell (she/her), Ada Juarez (she/her)

“Meet Me @ The Altar present a new musical and cultural paradigm for pop punk. The Florida trio—Edith Johnson [vocals], Téa Campbell [guitar], and Ada Juarez [drums]—certainly rip just as hard as the forbearers who inspired them, but the group also speak from a position rarely, if ever, heard in the genre as proud women of color.”

Nathan Weaver, KLN ’19 (he/him)

Nate Weaver got his start in Radio when he interned for a country music morning show in Harrisburg, PA. After high school he moved out to Philadelphia to attend Temple University, where he was active at the college’s student radio station, WHIP, as an on-air host, news director and production director. After College, he was hired full time at Entercom Communications as the Morning Show Producer at WBEB (Philly’s B101.1). He then expanded his role to include on-air personality at 96.5 TDY and works directly with the market’s digital lead to create content for the websites and social media accounts.

Jeff Hurley (he/him)

Jeff Hurley has worked in radio at iHeartMedia for nearly 17 years. Having joined the company in 2004, he has worked his way up from Program Director to Vice President, and is currently Executive Vice President of Programming, having started the role in January of 2020.

Jason Peters (he/him)

Jason Peters is a completely independent writer and creative. He has inked freelance contracts with many of Philadelphia’s largest media outlets like WHYY and Grid Magazine, as well as created his own outlets such as the 2100 Podcast. Peters navigates the freelance space, pitching ideas to anyone who will listen, and breaking news along the way.

Will Loftus (he/him)

Will Loftus is an audio engineer and musician who is currently the Line Producer for the nationally syndicated radio program World Cafe from NPR. Will graduated from Temple in 2018 with a Communications degree in Media Studies & Production, with a focus in audio engineering. Will is an active musician, and plays guitar and keyboards in several Philly based bands.

Women in Media

Women in the industry discuss barriers, breakthroughs and best practices.

Elena Botkin-Levy (she/her)

Working at the intersection of youth development and media-making for over a decade, Elena Botkin-Levy joined Women’s Audio Mission (WAM) as Director of Education in 2019 and is currently Special Projects. She previously served as Director of Media Education at YR Media (formerly Youth Radio) where she led the design and implementation of multimedia training programs for Bay Area high schools students. She managed outLoud Radio, a queer youth media-making program and ran the radio station and training program for young people at ZUMIX in East Boston. Producing radio as a teenager propelled Elena into the media world where she’s produced freelance pieces and supported the work of Prometheus Radio Project, the National Radio Project and Free Speech Radio News. Elena is an alumni of Temple University, a collector of oral and community histories, and an aspiring drummer.

Delilah Dee (she/her)

Delilah Dee holds many titles, but is most known as a symbol of positivity and inspiration to her Philadelphia community. The proud Latina is a true definition of a 24/7 businesswoman.  Delilah is the founder and CEO of SHFT World — a digital content & events agency focused on empowering communities of color to transition from dreamers into doers. She utilizes the SHFT e-commerce platform to donate thousands of dollars towards small grassroots organizations fighting for the uprising of Black + Brown communities. Additionally, Delilah is best known for her work in event curation and experiential marketing working with brands such iHeartRadio, HBO, Google, SalesForce, and many more bringing high quality events and opportunities to the City of Brotherly Love. Her work is fueled by a passion for creating meaningful experiences targeted towards under-represented communities and enterprising women.

Cassie Petrey (she/her)

Cassie Petrey co-founder of Crowd Surf, a digital marketing company servicing stars such as Backstreet Boys, Fifth Harmony and Britney Spears. Petrey ran the notorious AOL Backstreet Boys newsletter that had over 10K subscribers and by age 17, worked for Warner Music Group as a College Representative. When MySpace made its debut,  Petrey capitalized on this by setting up pages for her projects. This led to her position in Warner Digital Marketing department. By 25 she was featured on Billboard’s “30 Under 30”. Crowd Surf now has a client roster boasting a collective social footprint of approximately 800 million followers.

Alexi Rabadam (she/her)

Alexi Rabadam, CEO & Founder of Finessed Media, Inc., is a NYC-based serial entrepreneur who began her career as a businesswoman at the age of 18. While attending San Francisco State University full-time, Alexi brought in $.5 million in revenue for College Works Painting, then later moved on to a Strategic Accounts role with Robert Half where she managed San Francisco’s largest clients such as Lucasfilm, Warner, Sony, and more. Alexi has consulted in business development for early-stage startups and launched Finessed Media, Inc. in January 2020 when she recognized a gap in music business education. As a former gospel & classically trained choral singer, and a leader in business for young entrepreneurs, her goal is to push boundaries in the music industry by finding the best artist talent and music executives worldwide to provide industry insight to music lovers and entrepreneurs across the globe.

Fel’esha Love (she/her)

Fel’esha Love travels across the country facilitating workshops to grow leaders and build iconic teams across industries. While raising two daughters, navigating dual 30-year careers in broadcasting and fitness, and earning a master’s degree in Business Administration, Love was offered a faculty position in Wellness at Spelman College which lasted seven years. In 2016, Love was appointed Director of Development for the National Black Radio Hall of Fame (NBRHOF) and Vice President of the Atlanta Chapter to run national marketing campaigns and assist with planning and research for regional and national agendas. Through her research she noticed the of disparities of Black women in the industry and created the acclaimed #BlackWomenInRadio campaign.  As founder of BWIR, Love continues to  promote change in the way Black women are viewed in media and connects women all over the U.S., and abroad of all age ranges and levels of experience to celebrate their significance and professional contributions
